Mardan is the second largest city of Pakistan’s the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province. During the second half of the 20th century, its population has grown manifold. In recent years, it has been a bustling trade and commercial centre. The district is spread over an area of 1632 square km with a population of 3, 997, 667, as per the 2017 census. It borders the districts of Nowshera, Charsadda, Malakand and Swabi. Being centrally located, it is the gateway to Peshawar, Malakand and Islamabad, about 141.7 kilometers (km) away from Islamabad and 65 km from the KP’s capital Peshawar. The main language of the district is Pashto. It obtained the status of a fully-fledged district before the partition.
In the year 1972, the Peshawar High Court declared Mardan a Sessions Division. Currently, it has two sub-divisions (Tehsils): Takht Bhai and Katlang. The courts working at the District’s Headquarter in Mardan city are: 01 District & Sessions Judge, 08 Additional District & Sessions Judges, 03 Senior Civil Judges and 15 Civil Judges/Judicial Magistrates; at Takht Bhai, 02 Additional District & Sessions Judge and 03 Civil Judges/Judicial Magistrates; and, at Katlang, 01 Additional District and Sessions Judge and 02 Civil Judges/Judicial Magistrates.
Mardan has 03 National Assembly seats, 08 Provincial Assembly seats, 64 Union Councils, 17 Police Stations, 52 Patwar Circles.
